The Signal Was Already Public
A company doesn’t hide the fact that it’s hiring. It posts the role — on its own careers page, on LinkedIn, sometimes in the job title itself. “Senior Backend Engineer, urgent.” The signal is already out there before anyone picks up a phone.
Most people in this business treat sourcing like detective work. They act like the job is finding companies that need help. It isn’t. The job is reading the roles that are already visible and understanding what they actually mean.
A posted role is a company telling the market it has a problem. The leverage is in reading that signal before ten other agencies do.
A backend engineering req behaves differently from a DevOps req, and both behave differently from a senior technical leadership search. Each implies a different urgency, a different budget, a different kind of recruiter. Treat them the same and you match wrong.
That’s the actual work — not generating demand out of nothing, but sitting close enough to the signal to catch it early, and knowing enough about recruiting to know which firm should be in the room.
The market tells you where it’s hiring. Almost nobody is listening closely enough to act on it.
